When we have new guidelines from the church and the state, and feel that those guidelines can be safely implemented given the constraints of our occupancy, we will move ahead with a plan for opening.

Open Studio: Figure in the Landscape

Join this 3 week open figure workshop. Models will pose at various outdoor venues in scenic Bristol. Open to all media and skill levels.  No instruction-simply an opportunity to paint or draw from live models in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Models will be clothed. There will be some short poses to warm up and one long pose.

Date:        3 Wednesdays, July 8, 15 and 29 (no class July 22)

Time:        9:30-12

Tuition:     $60/50 members (tuition is to pay the models)

Now open to drop-ins. You can pay when you come. Rain cancels

$30/$25 members for one week$45/$35 members for two weeks

Abstracting Your Reality

Abstracting Your Reality/Art Kit included

Class Description
Forget reality and concentrate on a non-representational artwork!
Create an abstract painting/ mixed media artwork from one of
your photographs. Zero in on a small area of one of your favorite
photographs using a viewfinder and crop the most interesting
area. Keep in mind that the chosen area will become your
individual, stand-alone artwork. Think about the composition,
colors and lines of the isolated area. The area will be enlarged on
a 12 x 12” gessoed Masonite board. Concentrations will focus on
line, space, composition and color. We will also take a look at the
history of abstraction, abstract artists and personal techniques.

Art Kit Includes:
-Gesso, Modge Podge, one 12” x12” piece of Masonite,
viewfinder and grid instructions for enlargement.
-Written directions, video and Google slideshow.
-Your printed photo. (If you don’t have a color printer, you can
email it to the instructor and she will include your printed color
photo in your art kit. (Kirstensorensen83@gmail.com)
Register below then receive your instructions via email and pick
up art kit outside of the Portsmouth Arts Guild building. The art
kits will be safely packaged and placed in a plastic tub by the front
door at 2678 East Main Road, Portsmouth.


TEACHER BIO: Kirsten Sorensen has a BFA in Painting and Art
Education. She is an artist and art educator who has taught and
directed art-based programs for over forty years. She spent the
last 26 years teaching art at Cranston High School East and lives
in Bristol, Rhode Island.

3 Day Plein Air Workshop 

Painting Seascapes with Joel Popadics

Join watercolorist Joel Popadics on a plein Air workshop in picturesque Rhode Island. Learn how to capture the feeling of light and atmosphere in your paintings in this 3-day workshop for all levels. Each day we will meet at different locations in Jamestown and Newport, including Beavertail and Ocean Drive. Morning and afternoon sessions will begin with a painting demonstration on how to paint rocks and the ocean in watercolor. After the demos you will have the opportunity to paint and apply the concepts presented. Individual instruction will be provided throughout the day.

Instructor:  Joel Popadics is Vice-President of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) and a Past-President of the New Jersey Watercolor Society. He’s been featured many times in American Artist, the Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist and Watercolor Magic Magazines. He’s been teaching watercolor for over 30 years and is a popular workshop instructor. Painting the Working Waterfront with Anthony Tomaselli

“You will be inspired and challenged and you will leave this workshop motivated to PAINT, PAINT. PAINT!”…..Anthony Tomaselli

Open to all media (oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor)
• Beginning each day with a short demo, Anthony will cover plein air strategies such as simplifying the subject and quick sketching to zero in on the feeling and focus of the painting. There will be an emphasis on composition and finding the focal point.
• We will paint the waterfront in Bristol and Warren, including wharves, boats and harbor views. However there are plenty of village views as well that can be considered. Your choice.
• 3pm we will gather and critique. A bit of beverage, beer and wine will be provided….

Anthony Tomaselli

One of the most recognizable painters in Rhode Island, Anthony Tomaselli has been active in nearly every arts organization in the State, as well as in venues beyond its borders. Outside of Rhode Island, he has shared his work in exhibitions in Maine, New York, and Florida, to name a few. Through years of experience, he has built a network of peers, students, and an eager clientele throughout The East Coast, north, central and south.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Margie Samuels is an experienced watercolorist and art instructor.  Graduating with honors from Brandeis University, she majored in fine arts, then went on to study painting at both the Arts Student League in New York and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts.

Samuels shows and sells her own paintings through various arts organizations as well as local and out-of-state galleries.  She is a Signature Member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society, the Garden State Watercolor Society and the Essex Watercolor Club.  She has won numerous awards for her paintings.  Samuels has an impressionistic style with a strong sense of composition; her paintings invite the viewer in through exciting brushwork and color combinations.

Samuels has her own studio in West Caldwell, NJ, where she teaches classes and workshops. In addition, each summer Samuels teaches watercolor with yoga workshop at the InView Center for the Arts at the Landgrove Inn in Vermont.
