Saturday Afternoons At the Guild

Welcome to Saturday afternoons at the Guild, where art and community come together. Our programs highlight the talents of local and regional artists through inspiring live painting demonstrations and interactive events.  Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Clements’ Marketplace and the Town of Portsmouth, our programs are free and open to all. Light refreshments will be served, and seating is limited, so please register in advance. While admission is free, donations are encouraged and greatly appreciated to help us continue bringing high-quality cultural programming to our arts community.

Cathy sketching 8 18 25

Cathy Chin, April 18, 2-4PM

“For those who relish in paint and paintings, the work of Rhode Island artist Cathy Chin is a delight to experience. . . Chin’s work bears a distinctive and gestural hand that is immediately recognizable. Her art always, regardless of subject, has a bright and sun-drenched quality.” Michael Rose, (March 3, 2022), Inside Art with Michael Rose, Go Local Prov.

Cathy works in watercolor, acrylics and oils.  Her subject matter comes from life and from loose interpretations of photos.  Architectural landscapes and organic forms inform her paintings, done both plein air and in her studio. Cities, neighborhoods, botanical gardens, interiors all find a home on her canvases. Cathy creates paintings which are depictions of ordinary sightings composed in interesting ways, telling a story perhaps, balancing shapes, color, rhythm, texture.

Cathy’s formal education began at RISD and the Rochester Institute of Technology.  She is a member of the New England Watercolor Society, the NH Art Association, and the Art League of RI.  Find Cathy on instagram as @realandplastic.

Todd M. Casey, Portsmouth Arts Guild

Todd Casey, May 30, 2-4PM

Todd M. Casey is an artist, author and teacher who was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. Casey’s work touches on more than simplistic realism. His work is classically styled but progressive in approach.  Every painting has a tale to tell, brewed from a deep well of introspective thought.

He has authored the best selling books The Art of Still Life and The Oil Painters’ Color Handbook through Monacelli/Phaidon Press. He is currently working on two more books due out in the Fall of ’26 and the Fall of ’27. He also periodically writes for the Artist’s Magazine and International Artist’s Magazine.

When not painting, writing, or illustrating, Casey teaches at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art, and through private online classes and workshops.
